1942

Born December 15 to Sonya and artist Mordechai Reichwarger (years later, after his arrival in Israel, Jan would change his surname to Rauchwerger). Place of birth: Bairam Ali, Turkmenistan, to which the family was evacuated from Kharkov, Ukraine, because of the war.

1943

After the Ukraine is liberated from German occupation, the family moves back, settling in the capital, Kiev.

1954-61

Studies in the Painting Department of the T.G.Shevchenko High School of Art, adjoining the Kiev Academy of Art. Becomes an admirer of El Greco and of the Impressionists

1961-64

Serves in the Soviet Army, first in Kiev and later in the Western Ukraine, near Lvov

1964-68

Studies in the Graphic Design Department of the Moscow Polygraphic Institute

1965-73

Becomes the pupil and discipie of Russian artist Vladimir Weisberg, beginning a dialogue that continues to this day (Weisberg died in 1985)

1972

His parents and brother immigrate to Israel, where his father dies after four months.

1973

On June 25 immigrates to Israel with his wife Ira, also an artist; their first home is in Safed. In the autumn, begins to teach drawing and watercolor at the Avni Institute in Tel Aviv, a post that continues until 1978

1974

Lives in Tel Aviv. Organizes an exhibition of works by his father, Mordechai Reichwarger, at the Zvi Noam Gallery of Leivik House, Tel Aviv. Makes his first trip abroad, to Paris

1975

An exhibition of Vladimir Weisberg's works from Rauchwerger's collection is mounted at the Israel Museum. Moves to Bat Yam; his first child, Miri (Miriam), is born.

1977

His son Motti (Mordechai) is born.

1979

First trip to New York. Moves to Jaffa

1980

First trip to Italy and Switzerland

1980-82

Teaches at the Bezalel Academy of Art, Jerusalem

1982-83

Spends the year at the Cite des Arts, Paris

1983-85

Separates from Ira; moves to Tel Aviv

1986-89

Moves back to Jaffa and marries Galit Aloni. Their sons Daniel and Nadav are born. Becomes affiliated with the Bineth Gallery, Tel Aviv

1988-93

Works in a studio at Sadnat Ha'Omanim (the Artists' Studio), Tel Aviv-Jaffa

1990

Spends approximately half a year in Italy

1992-98

Lives and works in Jaffa. Begins to create etchings at Kibbutz Cabri's print workshop

1993

First visit to Moscow after twenty years

1998-2001

Lives in New York; works in a studio in Long Island City
